Afloat

Jozef Israëls, Children of the Sea, 1872

Seeking among the sand: a proper stone
that might resist how gravity always
ensures that downward pull. A smooth touch says,
‘How about me?’ So fingers dig—unknown
if appearance be but illusion shown.
The rock reveals itself to thrower’s gaze,
and then—if found worthy—in the hand stays
as young lad finds waters calm, little known.

The key to balance being in the weight—
too light provides nothing to launch, but so
too does its overload cause a stumble;
soon he shall learn why men should often wait,
taking neither too scant nor much in tow,
in finding the heave to keep one humble.
